White Snow in the Netherlands: A Portal to Childhood Magic and Timeless Reflection

The pure white snow blanketing the Netherlands right now transports me straight back to my happiest childhood winters. Schools closed, endless hours outdoors—building snowmen, skiing or sledding down neighborhood hills, skating on frozen canals. The crisp crunch of dry snow underfoot, the ethereal light that made dark winters feel bright, as if night never fully arrived. Constant magic everywhere. Wet feet, rosy red cheeks, endless laughter. Coming inside for steaming hot chocolate. Pure, endless joy.
Today, my father said something that deeply resonated: the thin, clear air that almost makes you high, the profound stillness, a different experience of time. Traffic slows, social life pauses, the world falls quiet. Time takes on a new meaning—or perhaps ceases to exist altogether.
In this rare January 2026 snowfall—bringing code orange warnings, grounded flights, and a hushed landscape across the country—we're reminded to pause.
What is time, really? Why do we let it rule us? Do we miss something essential when we slow down... or do we finally experience life more deeply, giving it true meaning?
As Henry Van Dyke wrote: "Time is too slow for those who wait, too swift for those who fear, too long for those who grieve, too short for those who rejoice, but for those who love, time is eternity."
And Carl Honoré reminds us in In Praise of Slowness: "The great benefit of slowing down is reclaiming the time and tranquility to make meaningful connections—with people, with nature, with our own bodies and minds."
In these snowy moments, what truly matters? Presence. Joy. Connection. The simple magic we knew as children.
If the snow has you reflecting on time, childhood wonder, or what really counts in life, you're not alone. As a life coach, I help people slow down, reconnect with their inner joy, and live more meaningfully—even when the world rushes on.
