Iron Silence

Today, a client’s words echoed during my walk, cutting through the quiet. “Iron silence. No emotion. No vision,” he said. In his daily work, he notices how everything stays within the lines, offering little inspiration or future vision. Why? What does it yield? He spoke of colleagues gripped by fear, shielding themselves or feeling unengaged. It’s a struggle to navigate, he admitted. Does he want to fit into that row, losing himself as the price? Why? This isn’t his first complex work environment—does he want to endure it again?
One of his coaches offered perspective: “You’re on the 40th floor, easily peering down to all other levels. Many others are stuck on the ground floor, unable to reach your height or understand you.” The choice seems clear, but its impact is profound.
This struck me: What does this conformity bring us? Where are we headed together? Who do we want to be—and why? Are we proud of this? What’s the cost of adapting, both short-term and long-term? How do you see it? Who do you choose to be?
